This is supposed to be my second literature assignment. Here is the question:
• Write one paragraph each for why Jack and the Giant both deserve our sympathy.
I sympathize with Jack for a few reasons. Firstly, Jack has to work hard at a very young age due to poverty and also because his mother is a widow but, no one wants to employ him. Hence, for his family to survive, they had to sell their one and only cow, which gave them milk every day until that fateful day which it did not give milk, to start a shop with the money they get. The other reason for me to sympathize with Jack is because he had to starve one whole day as he did not sell the cow for money but beans, magical beans. He had started to steal from the Giant’s house as he was tempted to do so. He and his mother badly needed money to survive as they were extremely poor. Though stealing might be bad, we have to take into consideration his state and situation which had caused him to steal. Hence, I still do sympathize with him.
I also sympathize with the Giant. He certainly did not deserve to fall to his death because of Jack, and his greediness. Though the Giant loved to devour English boys to please his appetite, I feel that he is quite a kind giant. Jack had stolen thrice from the Giant thinking that the Giant was very rich and so would not care if some of his wealth was stolen. He was very wrong indeed. The stolen items were the Giant’s properties which were earned by him after his hard work. Jack on the other hand had done nothing to earn the properties. He simply stole them. Hence, I sympathize with the Giant.
